- Your health will be closely monitored throughout the study
- You gain access to new research treatments before they are widely available
- You can help others by contributing to medical research
Major types of clinical trials
- Treatment trials: test treatments for a specific disease or condition
- Supportive care trials, or Quality-of-life trials: study ways of helping to bring comfort to people who are sick and to help them have a better quality of life
- Prevention trials: study ways to reduce the chance that people who are healthy, but may be at risk for a disease, will develop the disease
- Early detection or Screening trials: study new ways of finding diseases or conditions in people who are at risk, before they have any signs or symptoms
- Diagnostic trials: test new ways to identify, more accurately and earlier, whether people have diseases or conditions
Phases of clinical trials
- Phase I: researchers test an experimental drug or treatment in a small group of people (20-80) for the 1st time to evaluate its safety, determine a dosage range, and identify side effects
- Phase II: the experimental study, drug, or treatment is given to a larger group of people (100-300) to further evaluate effectiveness and safety
- Phase III: the experimental study or treatment is given to a larger population (1000-3000) to confirm its effectiveness, monitor side effects, compare it to commonly used treatments and collect information that will allow the experimental drug or treatment to be used safely
- Phase IV: post-marketing studies (up to 30,000 patients) chart additional information including the drug’s risks, benefits, and optimal use
